About Me

Hi I'm Taylor, but online I go by the name Flottacat. I am a disabled, non-binary artist from Yorkshire - but currently living in the midlands.

As an artist, I use diverse range of techniques, such as; photomontage, collage, digital illustration and printmaking. Art has always been part of my life, but the way I create change significantly when I developed PTSD. The NHS offered me a few sessions of CBT, when I didn’t get better, they discharged me. Instead I turned to art to process my trauma, it started with a sketchbook of rough sketches and writing that was hidden under my bed. Since then, it has developed into a more refine digital pieces that I share publicly on my instagram.

I quickly realised that my work resonated with other people too. No one taught me how to do digital collages or express my trauma in that way, I just did what I felt worked for me.  I studied fine art and graphics at both GCSE and a level. From the age of 15 I’d take up an entire table in the art room with collage supplies as I re-created landscapes from fabric and torn-up book pages, I liked working at large scales and anything ‘messy’. Currently, I'm doing a degree in graphic design and  illustration. While that involves working towards specific projects/briefs - I still try to incorporate my style into this.

My personal art relates to my experiences as a disabled and trans person. As a theme, disability is very complex - each piece focuses on one specific experience/element of being disabled. This can be anything from living with chronic pain, the stigmas I face as well as the discrimination. My work started as. a way to deal with my PTSD, so naturally some of it is quite dark - but I also love to create work about Trans and Disabled joy. I don’t want to limit myself to just one media or subject, I want to create work that is a mixture of art and activism, that people can relate to or that educates people on disability/trans issues.

This website showcases my work; I have roughly organised these into categories. Most of my work, and relevant captions, are posted to my instagram @Flottacat.
